Walter Cronkite Named Community Hero;
Will Host Stone Soup Foundation Event
Tuesday, July 4, 2000
The Stone Soup Foundation is pleased to announce that Walter Cronkite
has been selected by the Vineyard community as a Community Hero -
representing the seasonal resident form Edgartown. He was nominated
by a diverse group of people for his contribution to Sail Martha's
Vineyard. The most memorable was when he made it possible for the Tall
Ship, Danmark to sail to the Vineyard.
Walter Cronkite is one of the most actively involved seasonal residents
on the Vineyard, the foundadion noted in announcing the honor. He has had
a positive influence, giving quietly and publicly to many Island
organizations.
When Martha's Vineyard Hospital decided to create an endowment fund,
Mr. Cronkite added his voice to the educational video. By inviting all
"Islanders" - wherever they lived - to give, the Island Campaign
raised $5 million.
Mr. Cronkite has been part of an unofficial welcoming committee to
visiting dignitaries and celebrities including the Clinton Family,
the Kennedy family, Prince Edward and many others.
An avid sailor, he has been an active member of the Edgartown Yacht
Club since 1973, serving as an Officer of the Day. He also headed up
the Edgartown Harbor Clean-Up.
In addition to his biography, A Reporter's Life, Mr. Cronkite has
written three other books on sailing with Vineyard artist, Ray Ellis.
For 20 years, the Sail with Walter Cronkite has been a highlight of
The Possible Dreams Auction, generating thousands of dollars each
year for Martha's Vineyard Community Services.
Walter Cronkite is the host of The Celebration of Heroes honoring
local heroes and the Vineyard spirit. He is narrating the educational
video on Stone Soup for the World, which will premier on July 16 at
the Tabernacle.
