The Stone Soup Leadership Institute’s 2002-2003 project

The Institute’s Youth Leadership Campaign is a multi-faceted, media-oriented grassroots initiative designed to inspire millions of teens to build a better world. The Campaign will develop learning communities of teens dedicated to creating a world free from destructive social behaviors and a global network of support to develop into effective leaders for a healthy and just world. The campaign will culminate with the launch of Stone Soup for the Teen World (Random House/Fall, 2003).

Teen Hero of the Month Kori Smith, co-chair, Youth Leadership Council
Kori Smith founded Teens for Humanity to coordinate international humanitarian missions and local community service projects. TFH has inspired over 500 teens to get involved in serving in their local communities – and benefited thousands of people all over the world.

It is so important for youth today to see the effect we can have on the world. Many teens today have problems with their families, drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, depression, and suicide. They can, in fact, affect someone’s life for the better, and play an important role in our society.

Recent Media: STONE SOUP INSPIRES ACTION Alliance Partner Stone Soup Leadership Institute educates and inspires young people through their series of books that promote service. Youth Leadership Campaign’s New Project Manager
We welcome Erica Pearson, a recent graduate of Columbia University who has worked on community-based media projects: Urban Husbandry Project in New York City and the civic journalism project “Poverty Among Us” at a St. Paul, MN newspaper. Erica has also lived and worked in Chile.

New Partnerships: Shinnyo-en Foundation The Shinnyo-en Foundation is funding the Stone Soup for the Teenage World educational curriculum that will emphasize the universal values and explores the spiritual and cultural roots of service and prepare teens to be social entrepreneurs, building a more sustainable global economy and safer world.

The Stone Soup Leadership Institute’s educational curriculum meets one of the Foundation’s primary goals: the integration of ethical development into children’s school experience. In the light of recent events, it is increasingly important that we encourage our children to understand the root causes of human suffering in the world and the power we each have to take action.
     - Harumitsu Inouye, Executive Director, Shinnyo-en Foundation

Web Partnership: Mendocino Schools and Thanksgiving Coffee Students from the Mendocino Schools are re-designing our website: www.soup4world.com to be more hip and interactive so we can connect teens that are building a better, peaceful world. Thanksgiving Coffee, a Mendocino-based company featured in Stone Soup for the World is supporting this technology-based social entrepreneur project to develop global exchange projects with youth around the world involved in social change initiatives. Phil Speigel, designer of Just Think website is linking our site with other youth organizations and corporations and their websites such as: www.idealist.com

We need positive news – people doing good. This project helps me and other students feel more connected with those who are doing good in the world.
