The Celebration of Heroes with Walter Cronkite
honors local heroes and Vineyard spirit
On July 16th, the Stone Soup Foundation will host its annual event. The Celebration of Heroes with Walter Cronkite will be held at the Tabernacle, Oak Bluffs.
Creating an educated constituency of Americans is the most critical issue of our time. Our country needs people who are prepared to address the challenges facing us and our world. People want to hear about these kinds of ordinary heroes in the book, Stone Soup for the World, who overcame obstacles in their lives and are helping to make the world a better place. -Walter Cronkite
"Our goal is to give young people heroes they can learn from while nourishing the wonderful spirit of giving on the Island," says Marianne Larned, founding director of the Stone Soup Foundation. The Foundation's annual event will honor Vineyarders for doing good deeds and nourishing the Island's legandary spirit of service. Awards will be given to people from all six Island towns: a youth, an adult, a senior, a business and a seasonal resident. The Eleanor Roosevelt Award and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award will also be presented.
This family-oriented event is free and open to the public. It will be held from 5:30-7:00 p.m. A reception will follow from 7-8 p.m. Tickets for the reception are $75 and will feature Vineyard heroes, people featured in the book, Stone Soup for the World: Life-Changing Stories of Kindness & Courageous Acts of Service and supporters of the Stone Soup Foundation.
The Celebration of Heroes Project is an integrated part of Vineyard schools. Teachers have been using the book, Stone Soup for the World to describe the "hero's journey" and show how people can become heroes by overcoming obstacles in their lives and helping others. Sponsors are invited to help support a project coordinator to work with the schools to use the Stone Soup for the World educational curriculum to teach students values, character education and citizenship lessons and inspire them to become leaders in our community.
Tickets may be purchased at Bunch of Grapes, Bickerton & Ripley or call the Stone Soup Foundation at 508-696-8514.
